Crowntainers 1939 to the Mid 1950's

* BCCA United States Beer Cans

** Production of Crowntainers started very late in 1939. The earliest crowntainer cans had a box on the side stating

CROWNTAINER

REG'D US PAT. OFF.

 and crowntainer cans continued with this early box until 1945. Crowntainer cans made from1939 to WWII also had IRTP on them. Cans made during WWII exist in two major varieties: the Olive Drab (OD) cans and the Non-Metallic gray Cans. The Olive Drab cans had the statement "Withdrawn Free of Internal Revenue Tax for Exportation". The Non-Metallic color cans usually had the statement "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP). Post WWII cans returned to the prewar colors of  metallic gray or metallic silver and a bone color or some variation of off-white (and had IRTP on them). The Post war cans have a different box on the side which states

This box remained on Crowntainers until they were discontinued in the 1950's. In early 1950 another major change occurred. The requirement for the IRTP statement was dropped and cans produced after that no longer had IRTP on them. Some cans should appear in both IRTP and non-IRTP categories but are only listed in one, let me know. The following cans I have yet to classify ..and need.
